Description by the author

This hike up to the Tuxer Kamm ridge is one of the classics in the region and takes in a section of the Berlin High Way. It starts at the northern end of the Schlegeis reservoir, at the Dominikushütte hut (1,805 metres), and ends there as well. En route hikers take in the Friesenberghaus (2,498 metres) and the Olpererhütte (2,389 metres), accessible via a hanging bridge with fabulous views of the reservoir below. The section on the Berlin High Trail crosses a number of streams which can present a challenge when water levels are high. Please keep your eyes out in early summer for snow fields which have not yet melted.
Below the Dominikushütte on the shore of the Schlegeis reservoir, take trail number 532. The first section is a nice and easy warm-up heading in a northerly direction. The first few corners at the Falschseitenbach stream are also nice and flat. Hikers pass pine trees and fir trees as they make their way through the meadows to the Friesenbergalm hut (closed). After around two hours you will reach the Lapenkar – and after crossinf the Lapenkarbach stream, you will get to the Friesenberghaus. This large hut is located on the Berlin High Way. After a stop there, head down to the Friesenbergsee lake. Cross over the stream and then wind your way up along a series of switchback corners on the opposite slope. At around 2,600 metres above sea level the path divides. Take the left-hand fork and head uphill. You will eventually reach a hanging bridge at 2,400 metres above sea level leading to the Olpererhütte. In good weather the views of the Schlegeis reservoir and its surrounding mountains are truly majestic. In order to return to the starting point, take trail number 502 from the Olpererhütte and head downhill along a series of switchbacks. Then cross over to the right-hand side of the Riepenbach stream and head south-east through pine shrubs all the way to the Schlegeis reservoir. There, walk along the road on the edge of the reservoir back to the starting point at the Dominikushütte.
