Description by the author

Spanning South County Kildare, discover a host of sites linked to the great explorer, including an early Georgian Villa and Gardens, an authentic Quaker Village and an Ernest Shackleton Museum.

From the ancient pathways and by-ways of Celtic and Christian Ireland, to Norman strongholds, gentrified houses, a Quaker Village and the legacy of Ernest Shackleton, Explorer’s Way is abundant with hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Starting at the Clanard Court Hotel in Athy, the first stop is the rural village of Kilkea and birthplace of Ernest Shackleton. The route continues to the tranquil setting of Burtown House & Gardens, an 18th century Quaker home whose gardens were created by Isobel Shackleton, a cousin. Further along the route, wander through the simple streets of Ballitore, the first planned Quaker Village in Ireland and home to the world-renowned school founded by Abraham Shackleton. A visit to the Shackleton Museum will complete the experience, the only permanent exhibition in the world devoted to the explorer.
