Description by the author

This is the fifth day of the bike ride along the Hadrian Wall and Wainwrights Coast to coast route. The low budget route goes from campsite to campsite. The section along the Hadrian Wall follows National Cycle Route 72 to Carlisle. After Carlisle, the track curves towards St. Bees, the starting point of Wainwrights coast to coast from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. This coast to coast route is originally a hiking trail. I have tried to include bike paths and quiet roads that are as close to the walking route as possible.

This is the fifth day of the cycle route along the Hadrian's Wall and Wainwrights Coast tot Coast.

The low budget route goes from campsite to campsite . The part along the Hadrian's Wall follows the National Cycle Route 72 till Carlisle. After Carlisle the track bends in the direction of St. Bees the starting point of Wainwrights Coast to Coast from the Irish sea to the North sea. This coast to coast route is a walking route. I tried to use cyclingpaths and quiet roads that are situated as near as possible to the walkingroute.

Today's route goes through the magnificent Lake District. From the campsite in Keswick you would have to drive along the Keswick Railway cycle path. Unfortunately, during the autumn storms, 2 bridges over the Greta River were washed away, blocking this path. First inquire whether the bridges have been repaired. If that is not the case, you have to go via the A66 to Threlkeld to pick up the route again. Just after Penruddock you cross the A66 towards lake Ullswater. Here you can enjoy the view over the large lake.

In Pooley bridge there is a café where you can have a drink.

The rest of this trip is a succession of changing landscapes and beautiful views.

In Shap there is a good chance that you will encounter the walking or stumbling fellow backpackers.

After Shap, the landscape changes and you leave Lake district and you are back in the Pennines.

The Pennine view campsite in Kirkby Stephen was the first campsite to take hikers and bikers into account. The lady who received me was very friendly and helpful.
