Description by the author

Fourth stage of GR 1. The GR 1 Transversal Trail – also known as the "historic road" – connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean over the Pre-Pyrenees and the southern slopes of the Cantabrian Mountains. The starting point is in Sant Martí d'Empúries, south of the bay of Roses, and the end point at Cape Finisterre, in Galicia. At the beginning of 2016, 1,075 km of the GR 1 had already been signposted -from Empúries to the mountain pass of Puerto del Escudo (Burgos)- and it is an extraordinary immersion in an area characterized by large natural spaces and a world-class historical and artistic heritage, where the Romanesque style occupies a striking place. The Catalan part, from Sant Martí d'Empúries to Pont de Montanyana, is the best signposted. It is an extraordinary journey through the regions of Alt Empordà, Pla de l'Estany, Garrotxa, Ripollès, Osona, Berguedà, Solsonès, Alt Urgell, Noguera, Pallars Jussà and Alta Ribagorça.

Tackling the GR 1 is the best way to be seduced by the beautiful mountains of the Pyrenees, or fall in love with it completely! -. This great route trail offers a view over these mountains with more perspective and depth than the great routes that cross the Pyrenees along their central axis because the Pre-Pyrenees offer a better panoramic balcony to observe the axial Pyrenees, and at the same time, the lowlands: the transitional mountains between the plain and the mountain peaks, Lonely border area, often heavily wooded and wild. The GR 1 leads us through beautiful paths, ridges and ravines where we climb mountain passes and cliffs and walk old bridle paths and wide meadows. We thus discover an abrupt territory and, although inhabited since Prehistory, until today very unknown to most. Without a doubt a wonderful and unforgettable experience!
