Description by the author

After leaving Sierre, the beginning of the route takes you to Val d’Anniviers along the flanks of a mountain before you start scaling towards the pass via a series of spectacular switchbacks, reminiscent of some of the most legendary Alpine passes. After passing through the village of Niouc, the slope eases and you ride through some spectacular cliffs via a series of tunnels dug into the rock. The famous yellow postal buses that crisscross Switzerland are sure to notify you of their presence in the tunnels with their characteristic three-tone horn. The old fortified village of Vissoie then appears, providing some relief with a short descent as you exit the village. Then begins a good dozen of kilometres of climbing, first to Grimentz, then along a narrow road until the Moiry Dam at 2,000m of altitude.
The climb from Sierre to the Moiry Dam takes you from the Rhone Valley with its sunny vineyards to the mountains with snowy Alpine glaciers. The climb into the Val d’Anniviers is a treat for any cyclist, as the landscape around every turn is breathtaking. From the village of Niouc until Vissoie, the backdrop is truly the royal crown of Valais peaks with five summits at more than 4,000 metres, most notably the Matterhorn in the centre. The climb becomes very demanding after the picturesque village of Grimentz, and the slope gets even harder over the last five to six kilometres before the dam. Once you arrive at the top, be sure to take the time to cross the dam with your bike to see the view of the lake and glaciers on one side and the Val d’Anniviers and the Rhone Valley on the other.
A visit to the inside of the dam is possible on demand.
