Since the 15th century, the de Merode family has had an uninterrupted presence in Westerlo. Several members of this noble family left their mark on the appearance and development of the municipality and its surroundings. Together with eight other municipalities and towns, Westerlo forms the landscape park de Merode. It is an area on the border of the provinces of Antwerp, Flemish Brabant and Limburg.
At the transition of the Kempen and the Hageland there is a lot to discover. Nature, castles, abbeys and picturesque village squares are within cycling distance of each other. Westerlo is the Merode municipality par excellence and this cycling route is the ideal way to explore the rest of this princely region.
There are free parking spaces at the start of this route, at Sportpark De Beeltjens.During the weekly market on Wednesday mornings you are not allowed to cycle on the Grote Markt. This route uses the Kempen bicycle junctions.
