Description by the author

This is a wonderful day trip, part of which is done on the 3 Valleys steam train .
Tickets for the steam train can be purchased in advance via this site of cfv3v (25€ in 2022).

The steam train festival takes place in the fourth weekend of September. There is at least one steam train in each direction every hour. Otherwise it is only 1 or 2 steam trains per day.

Because the ticket has to be exchanged for a coupon in Mariembourg ( this was the case with Corona - perhaps not anymore afterwards), the route starts at Mariembourg station where the ticket is exchanged.

The idea is to walk the entire route once and take the train once. During the festival, there is a train every hour in each direction. These cross each other in Olloy, where the trains also stop and you can get on and off. Usually this is at the quarter past the hour (10:15, 11:15, 12:15, ...).

- Mariembourg Olloy on foot (approx. 8 km). We pass the ruins of the castle of Dourbes.

- board the train in Olloy to Treignes (6 km - 20 minutes) (departure times: 12:15 13:15, 14:15, ...)

- Treignes - Olloy on foot (7 km)

- board the train in Olloy to Mariembourg (6 km) (departure times: 15:15, 16:15, 17:15, ...)

A good plan is to start walking from Mariembour to Olloy around 10:00 and take the train there at 12:15, then the train back to Olloy at 17:15 is easily feasible if you look around everywhere and eat/drink something.

Both in the station of Mariembourg and Treignes there is a lot of atmosphere (exhibitions, ...) and possibilities for restaurants.

In Olloy (near the church), Vierves (hotel Le Petit Mesnil on the railway) and Treignes (Le Montjoie) there are nice terraces.
