Discover all benefitsAdventurous hike Montagne Saint-Pierre, Fort Eben-Emael and the Caestert plateau.
This beautiful walk passes by the Saint-Pierre mountain and the klein-Ternaaien lock complex. We walk along the Albert Canal and visit Fort Eben-Emael. Along the way, several cave entrances and finally we visit the ruins of Caestert and the Ternaaien-Boven quarry.
From the indicated car park, we drive along the Albert Canal towards the Klein-Ternaaien lock complex. We see up close how the ships here are gunned from bottom to top (or vice versa). A nice place to walk around, there is a lot to see. After leaving the lock complex, we enter a small nature reserve. After a few views and benches, we choose the path down. If it is too steep or in wet weather, you can also continue to follow the main path. We see a surprising nature reserve with many water birds. We also see in the trees that the beaver has sometimes worked hard here.
We continue walking towards the Ternaaien bridge. After crossing we turn left and a little later we climb a flight of stairs to an area with many cave entrances. There is also a lot to discover here. Various information panels provide text and explanations on this area. There is also a special place for children to learn more about this area in a fun way.
We leave this area through a gate and walk a short distance on a paved road. Before entering the next nature reserve, we can visit the entrance to the Ternaaien tunnel. This old tunnel connects the Albert Canal to Eben Emael and is more than 1.5 km long!
We continue walking along the caves and through the meadows. At the 5.5 km point is a nice place with a bench for picnic-and enjoy the view of the Albert Canal. A cave can also be visited here.
A little further away is a viewpoint over the Ternaaien locks and we enter the Eben-Emael area. We pass several bunkers, some of which are still equipped with the necessary artillery. Finally, we get off at the information center and the monument.
Via the Albert Canal and the Kanne Bridge, we continue to the Caestert plateau. Here we walk along the ruins of Caestert and the quarry of Ternaaien-Boven. Through a historic entrance gate we go down to the car park.
It was another beautiful walk!
