Land dunes are sandy hills formed after the last ice age, by the blowing out of sand from the rivers. This specific landscape of high, dry land dunes and low, wet stream valleys is a testimony from a distant past and still defines the structure of the landscape of Balen, Geel, Meerhout and Mol. The land dunes make for beautiful landscapes with very distinctive flora and fauna. Pedunculate oaks and mountain pines define the picture. Typical inhabitants of the dunes are digger wasps, sand bees and sand beetles. On the dry sand ridges you walk through extensive coniferous forests, beautiful moors and vast sand drifts.
