Description by the author

As its name suggests, the village is located on a stream: the Mollendaalbeek. It has its source in the hamlet of the same name, 1 km south of the village. The surroundings of Mollendaal are one of the most rural areas of Bierbeek. Wide fields and beautiful hooves indicate that the soil is very fertile. The name 'Schavaai' means mutsaard, forest of branches, in the local dialect. However, it is more likely that the name of the place is a distortion of the Romance word "scavée" which in turn is derived from the Latin excavata, which means quarry.
