Description by the author

This route passes a number of information points giving hikers background information on the forest's unique history and biodiversity. The route was designed in support of the United Nations (UN) Decade for Ecosystem Restoration (UN Environment Programme/Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN) in partnership with the Sonian Forest Foundation and UNESCO, the UN’s educational, scientific and cultural organisation.

Since 2017, the best protected parts of the Sonian Forest (integral forest reserves) are inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List (Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe), as part of a group of a total of 94 exceptional beech forests in 18 European countries. The World Heritage Committee has recognised these forests as a joint testimony to the exceptional evolution and impact of the beech ecosystem in Europe since the last Ice Age.
