The Volkzeiner Hütte in the Winkeltal Valley near Außervillgraten enjoys a peaceful location between the mighty peaks of the Villgraten Mountains. This easy walk along the rushing Winkeltalbach river takes in meadows and pastures full of flowers. In autumn the trees glow in a thousand shades of red, orange, yellow and brown. The gentle profile and wide trails make this walk suitable for families.
This walk begins at the car park next to the Jausenstation Reiterstube in the Winkeltal Valley, 4.9 kilometres north-east of Außervillgraten. The adventure begins on a wide gravel trail along the banks of the river heading into the valley. The route then leads through lush pastures and meadows and, eventually, an area of forest. After around 15 minutes you will reach the Mooshofalm (closed to the public). Stay on the right-hand side of the river. Another half ann hour later you will reach another hut closed to the public, the Niederbrugger Alm. After that the route leads over the small Arnbach stream and, shortly afterwards, onto the other side of the Winkelbach river. 2.7 kilometres and 170 vertical metres later you will get to the Lackenkammeralm. From there it is just 30 minutes to the Volkzeiner Hütte at 1,886 metres above sea level. Return along the way you came.
