The Barrow Way

Follow the River Barrow’s historic towpath on a pictorial trail through county Kildare. Ideal for all level of walker, heritage sites and riverside scenery abound on this linear route.

The Barrow Way is a walking route starting from Lowtown in northern Co Kildare and meanders for 114km through the rest of the county, passing through Co Kilkenny and finishing in the monastic village of St Mullins in the south of Co Carlow.

Some interesting towns and villages along the route in Kildare are Robertstown, with barges lining the Grand Canal; the vibrant town of Rathangan; Monasterevin the Venice of Ireland, where the Barrow meets the Grand Canal; and Athy the birthplace of the great explorer, Ernest Shackleton.

With accommodation options from self-catering, hotels and bed and breakfasts theres an opportunity to spend a day or longer discovering the majestic landscape along the towpaths and riverside roads.
