Descripción por el autor

This bicycle tour has been designed for a 110+ Km bike ride to the Namtok Sam Lan National Park. Namtok Sam Lan National Park is a national park in Saraburi Province also called Khao Sam Lan National Park or Phra Puttachai National Park. The park, inaugurated on 2 June 1981, covers 45 Sq Km within four districts: Kaeng Khoi District, Nong Khae District, Wihan Daeng District and Mueang District. The highest point is the viewpoint on Khao Khrok at 329 meters. The park has three reservoirs being Khao Sam Lan, Khao Ruak and Sub Plakung and consists of deciduous and mixed forest. Tree species include Ironwood, Burmese ebony, Siamese sal and Makha. Other vegetation includes bamboo, rattan and orchid. Animal species include pheasant, jungle fowl, barking deer, mouse deer, wild boar and squirrel. Avian life is believed to have once included the white-eyed river martin, a native of northern Thailand now considered extinct. The park is also noted for its various butterfly species. Namtok Sam Lan means the Three-tiered Waterfall; the park was named after this fall containing three levels of each about 5 meters. Other waterfalls in the park are the Pho Hin Dat, Roi Kueak Ma and Ton Rak Sai Falls. During World War II (1940-45), the Japanese Army used this area as an encampment, entailing the destruction of some of the park's forests. Reforestation started in 1960.

A few highlights on this itinerary have been listed more for the sake of smoother navigation and referencing, although they may also appeal to many cyclists as points of interest. Individual cyclists can choose where to stop according to their own tastes and time constraints.

Tips and Warnings

Bicycles can be rented in different locations on Soi 2 Naresuan Rd, which is the starting point of this tour. It is also possible to rent bikes near the train station, which is closer to the area of this tour. Bike rental costs 40-50 baht (about $1.5) per day on average, which makes bike touring an inexpensive way to see the city. Ayutthaya’s terrain is mostly flat and easy to ride, but many streets and side roads are poorly marked, so use the map to simplify navigation.

Be cautious as traffic in and around Ayutthaya is sometimes chaotic and dangerous. Motor vehicles often fail to see cyclists and pedestrians, so you must closely watch out for them. Motorcycles are a common cause of local accidents. Dogs and potholes can also be dangerous, especially in remote areas. Weather can be very hot, so make sure to drink plenty of fluids and wear sun block. It is inadvisable to drive at night due to the lack of lighting.

The theft of bicycles is uncommon in Ayutthaya, but backpacks and cameras have been stolen on rare occasions. It is best to keep valuables with you when visiting the temples on route.
