Waverwoud: winter walk Natuurpunt Keerbergen January 2018. The Wavre Forest was mentioned a thousand years ago. Recently, some forests were connected by hiking trails so that something of the vastness comes back and you can walk here for a whole day!
This 7 km walk is the first part of that: there is walking in the Hondsbossen and the Gasthuisbossen.
Departure at the market of Sint-Katelijne-Waver, direction Hondsbossen, in the opposite direction walk around the Hondsbossen. Some beautiful old oaks, a large strip of American currant trees. Via the newly constructed corridor you can walk to the Gasthuis forests. There also in a counterclockwise way walk around the Gasthuis forests. Here many pines: Scots and Corsican pines. Back via the connecting corridor to the Hondsbossen to the Schans van Bosbeek. This Schans is a remnant of the defensive belt around Antwerp that served in WW1, a protected monument, but cannot be visited because it is private. Then you will be back at the starting point in no time.
In addition to the Hondsbossen and the Gasthuisbossen, you can also visit the Brede Zeyp, the fortress of Koningshooikt and the Vossenbergbos with the following route https://www.routeyou.com/nl-be/route/view/5003871/recreatieve-wandelroute/waverwoudwandeling
