Will Cancellara be able to defeat Martin, the man who dispossessed him of his crown? Will the German rider be able to win his fourth title on a row? Will Wiggins and Phinney finally get the world title of best elite time trialist? These are some of the many questions that can be asked before that event, undoubtedly one of the highlights of the World Championships.
Tony Martin won three titles on a row, what Michael Rogers did in the past too. But with four titles Cancellara remains the king of the specialty. To try and recover his crown in Ponferrada, the Swiss rider will have to struggle on the final part of the course that, after passing through the road circuit, climbs to the reservoir of Bárcena. Nevertheless the first 30 km are almost flat, what in principle favours a rouleur like Martin.
The course of that event is the sum of the Under 23 course and of the road course. As a consequence it is a varied one, with flat parts, a climb and a very technical and fast downhill leading to the finish. It is therefore open to all the specialists who will reach the event in good shape.
