This route connects the remaining 19 demarcation poles in Belgium. As these poles are the main theme of the itinerary which is quite long in itself, I chose not to make additional detours to visit other sites (sometimes very interesting).
These demarcation posts are memorial stones that indicate approximately where the German Western Front reached during World War I. These are stones cut in pink granite 1.25 meters high. At the top, a soldier's helmet is depicted, resting on a laurel wreath bearing the name of the front sector. A grenade is represented on the 4 corners, a country bottle on the left and a gas mask on the right.
In Belgium, there are three variants. The Belgian type has a Belgian Adrian helmet with a lion's head, the French A-type French helmet Adrian with the inscription RF and the British helmet type a British brodie.
If the inscriptions have been kept, you can read the following text (in 3 languages):
"Here the usurper was arrested - Here was arrested the invader - Here the invader was immobilized."
The route starts in Nieuwpoort and ends in Loker, near the French border. So we drive along the front of the First World War.
There is also a "Large" version of this route, which offers a good return to the place of departure in Nieuwpoort: https://www.routeyou.com/nl-nl/route/view/1022241/fietsroute/fietsen/the19demarcationstoneslarge.nl
