Discover all benefitsThis walk starts and ends at the Market of Gavere. The walk takes you along many unpaved and car-free paths through the lakes of Gavere and Semmerzake. It is best to do this on July 23, because then it is the anniversary of the battle of Gavere. Then, in the year 1453, it was a sweltering summer day. Here the rebellious Ghentians were crushingly defeated by the army of the Burgundian duke Philip the Good. Because the capitulation was signed in the ducal army camp at Gavere, this event was given the name Battle of Gavere, although the actual battlefield was largely on the coulters and in the Scheldt lakes of Semmerzake.
