Leiden is approached over the "Lage Rijndijk" (lower Rhine Dike) from the East. The old city is entered through the Zijlpoort (one of the two remaining gates). Here the route takes you along old buildings, historical places like the keep, churches, city hall, the other remaining city gate and the birthplace of Rembrandt van Rhijn. Part of the route takes you along the old city defenses which is now a park. Afterwards the route takes you to the Park Matilo, where in Roman times the Fort Matilo was located.
