Misa, Latvia

The Misa River is right tributary of Iecava in Zemgale - it is 108 km long, with a decline of 42 m. The main part of the Iecavas waters are flowed to the Lielupe through Velna ditch (Devil’s ditch), therefore the waters in the lower course of Iecava mainly are formed from Misa streams. Misa starts its flow in Valle parish, where its upper course is regulated by creating a network of ditches. The upper course of Misa is located in Upmale plain in Middle Latvian Lowland, but lower course – in Tīreļi plain. Misa ends its flow in Iecava near Ozolnieki.
The Misa flows through the wooden areas and the plains, giving home to a variety of water animals – beavers, water voles and minks. In banks of the Misa are a number of swamps, such as Beibeži, Lādzēni and Apšusala. By boating along the Misa in its banks can be seen area of summer cottages “Dzērumi” the parts of which are called in interesting place names, such as Lāčplēsis and Tekstilnieks. Through this summer cottage area the Misa carries boats about 9 kilometres by flowing through several pedestrian bridges – near the one of them can be seen an impressive secular tree, which can be covered by 4 people. Further the river takes boaters into quite straight, wooden section with steep shores. In this place the river delights its guests with wild natural views, dominated by impressive tree root systems like from fairy movies. Misa caries the boats also along the horse farm “Dabas zirgi” (Natural horses) and later it crosses the Daugava - Misa channel.
The Misa River - it is an opportunity to enjoy the fascination of nature, murmuring of birds and brooks, and to flow along calmly waters of Misa with grace inherent only to horses. Boat rental provides such opportunity for everyone. Boat trip along the Misa is variable and unpredictable. In the spring the river has high water level, it is easy boatable. While in summer the water level in the river is low and there are many obstacles. In summer the boats can meet fallen trees, nibbled off by the beavers, but it can turn also into a great adventure.
