This route runs through the province of North Brabant. The route is plotted in the sandy landscape of the south of the Netherlands, which is intersected by small rivers and streams.
In contrast to the north of the Netherlands, the south of the Netherlands has never been covered by land ice.
In the Saalien ('penultimate' ice age) and the Weichselien ('last' ice age) there was hardly any vegetation present and thick layers of cover sand were deposited by icy sandstorms.
In the Holocene (a relatively warm period or intermediate ice age from 10,000 years ago to the present), swamps were formed in places where rainwater could hardly sink, and locally raised peat formed.
Roughly speaking, the southern sandy landscape is bordered in the west by the Zeeland sea clay area, in the north and east by river deposits of the Meuse and in the south by the border with Belgium.
Between Ossendrecht and Hilvarenbeek the route runs alternately over Dutch and Belgian territory.
The tour starts and ends at the (former) roadside restaurant De Liempdse Barrière (Peerkesbos).
This tour is part of a set of 16 tours that are intended for everyone with an eye for (the development of) the Dutch landscape.
In the Netherlands, 6 landscapes can be distinguished: loess landscape, sandy landscape, river landscape, peat landscape, sea clay landscape and dune landscape. The different landscapes are explored through 16 tours with mention of all kinds of scenic and historical sights / facts.
For those who want to know more about the sights / facts mentioned in the routes, the routes are also available in book form.
