Vanuit Cortina d'Ampezzo fietsen we over de Passo tre Croci, langs het mooie meer van Misurina met zijn terrasjes, naar de vreselijk steile Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Op 1 juni 1968 fietste de 22 jarige Eddy Merckx in sneeuw en hagel als eerste over de streep hier. Motta kreeg meer dan 4 minuten aan de broek en Gimondo maar liefst 9 minuten. Vanaf dan wist iedereen wat voor een supertalent Merckx was.
