Le Hageland a de nombreuses crêtes. Il y a une explication géologique à cela, car vous êtes assis ici avec des collines témoins fortement incisées de la mer de Diestiaan, nommées d’après la ville de Diest. La mer Diestian a principalement inondé le nord de la Belgique à l’époque du Tertiaire (il y a 70 à 3 millions d’années). En raison de sa composition, le sable s’agglutine fortement en bancs de sable dur. Lorsque ces bancs de sable étaient régulièrement exposés, la glauconite était altérée et le sable rouillé ensemble, créant une forte couche de grès ferrugineux .
