General Mangin's observation tower

Close to the front and natural rampart for the capital, the forest of Retz occupied a strategic position during the First World War. Located at a high point of the forest massif, the place called "La Tour Réaumont" is chosen by the French army to install a wooden observation tower about 30 meters high. In July 1918, it was from the top of this observatory that General Mangin led the victorious counter-offensive against the Germans. Today a stele marks the location of this tower disappeared during a storm in 1924. In 2017, a massive new construction will be erected, which will commemorate the 100th anniversary of this battle.
